Exceptionally Original Vintage 1968 Fender Telecaster – Blonde
Few guitars are as instantly recognizable—or as influential—as the Fender Telecaster. Introduced in 1950 as the world's first commercially successful solid-body electric guitar, the Telecaster has become one of the most recorded instruments in music history. It is prized for its unmistakable clarity, dynamic response, and remarkable simplicity.
This 1968 Fender Telecaster is a stunning example from one of Fender's most fascinating periods. Finished in its original Blonde lacquer over an ash body, the subtle grain remains visible beneath a finish that has gently mellowed over nearly six decades into the warm cream hue that collectors adore.
Originality and Features
Dating back to 1968, this guitar retains its original neck, body, electronics, and hardware. Key details include:
- Neck date stamped 3rd July 1968
- Matching factory markings that confirm the neck and body have remained together since leaving the Fullerton factory
- Original serial number, hardware, and electronics
The dark Brazilian rosewood fingerboard provides a striking contrast to the blonde finish and maple neck, creating one of Fender's most iconic visual combinations. The package is completed with:
- Original chrome bridge cover ("ashtray")
- Original threaded steel saddles
- Original hard shell case
- Even the original Fender polishing cloth
Condition
Finding an almost sixty-year-old Telecaster in this condition is becoming increasingly rare.
- The finish has aged naturally and gracefully, retaining an honest vintage appearance without excessive wear or abuse.
- A handful of small chips and marks around the lower edge of the body are present, but the guitar still presents exceptionally well, allowing the translucent blonde finish and ash grain to remain the focal point.
- It strikes the perfect balance between being well-preserved while avoiding an over-restored appearance.
Tone & Playability
Plugged in, this Telecaster delivers everything players expect from a great late-'60s example:
- The bridge pickup offers the unmistakable Telecaster bite—bright, articulate, and effortlessly capable of everything from Bakersfield twang to classic rock.
- The neck pickup provides warmth and surprising depth.
- The middle position produces the airy balance synonymous with countless studio recordings.
The guitar plays beautifully and remains an inspiring instrument to pick up. While the electronics would benefit from a routine clean (as expected for a vintage guitar of this age), they remain original and fully functional.
